The major helps you understand the role of media in society through an interdisciplinary approach that allows you to pursue your passions with courses from sociology, history, international studies, and more complimenting communication courses.

Drawing on more than 70 years of communication education, the Jandoli School of Communication prepares ethical communicators who can thrive in a rapidly changing world.

The Media Studies major joins seven other Jandoli School of Communication majors, which are accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.

 

While similar in some regards to other Jandoli School undergraduate majors, Media Studies is directed more to students who are not seeking traditional media careers. It serves as a good second major for students interested in political science and for those pursuing careers where they may find themselves working with those in the media.

Media Studies majors can engage with the , the Jandoli School's media and public policy think tank, which serves as a forum for academic research and constructive debate on the intersection between media and democracy.

With its academic flexibility and exposure to industry research, the program is an excellent pathway to graduate study, including law school.

Internships prepare you for growing job opportunities  

Media Studies graduates are in demand. “In New York and the nearby states, relevant employment is projected to increase faster than the average employment growth across all occupations in four of the top five most relevant occupations for bachelor’s level media studies professionals from 2018 to 2028,” according to research conducted by Educational Advisory Board.

All Jandoli School majors must complete 400 hours of internships, and are guided in finding on- and off-campus opportunities by the school's internship coordinator. There are also many opportunities to with with our many campus media outlets.

Bachelor of Arts in media studies

The major in Media Studies is for students who want to explore how media affects society. It's an interdisciplinary program that blends communication courses with those from sociology, history, international studies and other disciplines.

Communication minor

For non-majors, the minor in Communication provides a solid background in the fundamentals of effective communication.
